Who am I?

I´m Kolja Hübschmann, born 1988 in Schäbisch Hall, Germany. 2009 I began working as Freelancer in the VFX Industry. 2014 to 2018 I was studying m.gp (media, art and production) at the University of Offenburg. 2017 till now I am Lead Maya Pipeline Developer (TD) for the company Rise Visual Effects Studios.

You will also find my Student Showreel from 2015 (because of NDA I cant put a new Reel online) and get a short overview of my workingtimeline.

About me...

have a look at the blue section ;) just kidding. Apart from what the blue section can tell you I have no problem with keeping deadlines, outgrowing my limits or coordinating a huge Team. Also I have very good basic understanding of technic and logical thinking.

All of that made it possible for me to start working at RISE FX, where I had the honor to work on over 19 feature films like "Captain America", "Stranger Things", "Dark", "Fast and the Furios" and "Avengers". Furthermore I was honored with being on a set with Ron Howerd (Rush) and was booked for Advertisements by a German American Football Winner. My university granted me their trust in allowing me to produce a 14 min. full 3D Animated Movie while only being in the second semester, leading to my fellow students booking me as a VFX Supervisor for their movies. So lets see what´s next. Maybe you will be the one pushing my skills towards the next level...!? :)

software I am familiar with...

I started working with Maya in 2014, by learning from Digital Tutors and have done over 100 Tutorials. I have advanced skills in Rigging, Dynamics, Scripting (Python & MEL) and Rendering (Arnold and MentalRay) and foundated skills in all other parts of the 3D Pipeline.
In 2015 I started using Houdini at RISE FX for Shading and Rendering. At The end of my trainee program at RISE FX I started setting up an Houdini crowd FX shot and adaped my maya Python skills in Houdini.
In 2020 I started learning Unreal Engine from Pluralsight to speed up VFX production with a real time connection and to search for new opportunities having a better connection between "on Set works" and "Post-Productions".
With After Effects I started my career in Compositing. The most skills I learned from VideoCopilot. Now I use the software for creating some Motion Graphics and 2D/2,5D Animation.I started working with NukeX in 2015, by learning from fellow Students and Digital Tutors and use it now for CG Composeting.
3D´s Max, Adobe Master Collection CS6 (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Dreamwaver, etc.), C++, Java Script, TYPO3, Windows and Linux Server and in general IT Setups...

work Experience

Here you can find an excerpt of my work experience so far. Due to constant new projects this part of the site is always unter construction.

RISE FX

I spent 1 year working for RISE FX as a junior Pipeline TD and generalist in the 3D department, where I worked on the projects like "Jim Button" and "The Avengers: Invinity War". This was in combination with my bachelor thesis (BA). Right now I am Lead Pipeline Developer for Autosek Maya at Rise.

  • Pipeline Features

    One feature main Part in this time period was to develop an shot sculp pipeline for the Avengers project. Main challange was to update Shapes from assets and animations. As the Alembic export got to time expensive, I optimiced the export to an 60% speed up.
  • Arist and Project Tools

    Smal snipes of code with an ui to speedup productivity, like an Randomicer, implementing mayas MASH into the pipeline, optimize exporters and many more.
  • Ticket Requests

    Basic daily Artists support like fixing scenes, check renders, debug the pipeline ore give Artists knowledge that they need for there current work.

5/6th semester student film production "Lampion"

Directed by Jannik Paul Weisse, "Lampion" is a 90-minute film, split in three parts. We developed the first part in these two semesters. The movie is about a worst case scenario of Germanys Berlin in 20 years, where consumption, monitoring and terrorism got at his highest point.

We had to rebuild the entire "Potzdamer Platz" and put a lot of full CGI stuff inside the movie. Overall we handed 150 compositing shots, with eight post-people in one year.

  • VFX Supervisor

    I planned the compositing shots and managed the VFX artist team throgh the planning, filming and postproduction. Beside that I was responsive for a lot of movie input.
  • Technical Director

    As a technical director I created an entire inhouse pipeline tool (for Maya, Houdini, Nuke connected with an own external program) - that managed all art responsive departments an VFX-Shots. Besides that I created a lot of small scriptinh tools that made some progress steps a lot faster. Last but not least I managed three crowed shots, a few explusions and some destructions with houdini.
  • 3D Generalist

    As a 3D Generalist I moddelt 15 Humans, 1 Cybersoldier and a lot of photorealistic mechanic objects (aircraft, cars etc.). I Build 15 Shaders for the Potzdamer Platz and rigged the entire models.

RISE FX

I spent six months working for RISE FX as a trainee and became the generalist in the 3D department, where I worked on the projects "Renegades" and "The First Avenger: Civil War". The trainee program was in context of my 4th semester and helped me greatly in improving my skills in the featured film industry.

  • Generalist

    I had a lot of moddeling, texturing and shading tasks and was responsible for the matchmove-alignments. As a generalist I worked with Maya, Houdini, Mari and NukeX.
  • Rigging

    One of my specialties at the internship was rigging.I lerned to create an autoRigger with Python, and did a lot of human rigs, airplains, cars and mechanics. Besides that I created a lot of small scriptinh tools for the other department.
  • Houdini FX

    At the end of my trainee program I got the task of working on a Houdini crowd shot. I improved the older version by adding additional features such as cloth sim and more variations and automated the crowd setup via python scripts.

3rd semester student film production "Oktober"

Directed by Maximilian Förstner and Sascha Schmidt, "Oktober" is a 10-minute short film about a person sitting on a tree and looking into a panorama shot while two people are talking about ordinary things off-camera. The panorama as well as the human on the tree and the CG bird sitting next to him are a VFX-Shot.

  • VFX Supervisor

    I planned the compositing shots and managed the VFX artist team. We made a 3D protection plane of a tree to create a digital camera zoom and to realign the tree on the panorama shot. Furthermore, we built a full CG bird and a lot of set extensions into the panorama scene.
  • 3D Generalist and Technical Director

    As generalist, I textured the bird, built a rig for it and helped the artists with modelling. I also built a full setup for the bird with xGen and at the end took care of the rendering.
  • Composititing

    Amongst other things, I created some set extensions for the main compositor Milena König, animated a hang-glider and rotoscoped some parts of the tree.

3rd semester fictitious advertisement "Mercedes Vision GT "

A 1:30 min. fictitious commercial for Mercedes-Benz focusing on the full CG-Car "AMG Vision GT" which is morphing into a female transformer.

  • Director and Idee

    I came up with the idea for the spot and then later directed it.
  • Team Coordinator and VFX Supervisor

    Apart from directing, I also coordinated the postproduction team and the film and VFX crew. We did some driving shots in the Alps and some story telling shots in Offenburg. The rest of the work was done in postproduction.
  • 3D Generalist and Compositor

    I had responsibility over all CG elements and - modelled, textured and rigged them. Besides that I worked in the compositing team.

2nd Semester student full CGI animation movie "2020"

An interdisciplinary project by students at the universities of Offenburg, Tübingen and Stuttgart, developed and produced between 2013 nd 2015. "2020" is a 14-minute full CG animation movie. The plot takes place in a parallel universe which resembles the world we live in, in time and appearance. It's an end time animation influenced by the style of "Mad Max".

  • Executive Producer

    I was head of the team and - managed all financial aspects and the timing for the movie. For example, I was able to get Red Bull as a sponsor and recruited the Band "Black Sun Empire" as a music partner for our project.
  • Production Manager

    I - built a timeline for all 3D artists to get the project done in one semester. In addition, I was responsible for the communication between the students of the different universities involved in the project.
  • Technical Director and Generalist

    I built the rig for 16 different models as well as a snake with dynamics, a talisman and three faces. Moreover, I made a setup for nCloth, modelled the main actors and directed the motion captur and faceshift (face captur) team.

JKV Managment

JKV Management is a business which is specialised in setting up festivals and club events. During my internship, they organized the "Freischwimmer" festival and "Freischwimmer" events.

    responsible for the internet presence on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Web Development

    I built the homepage for the Freischwimmer festival with a team of artists.

Hallywood-Productions was founded in 2004, are working on national and international advertisements and movie Blockbuster such as "James Bond 007 - Quantum of Solace" and "Rush" (directed by Ron Howard).
